Если копаться только в английских источниках, происхождение этой идиомы может оказаться скрытым лондонским туманом (на самом деле это были вовсе не туманы, а дым от заводов, поэтому книжку странствиях по Британщине я в своё время и назвал «Солнечным Альбионом»), но мы с вами можем призвать на помощь французов, и тогда обнаружится, что они пером Монтеня ещё в 1580 году по поводу перехода с Юлианского на Грегорианский (в 1564 году) календарь писали:

Il y a deux ou trois ans, qu'on accoursit l'an de dix jours en France. Combien de changemens devoint suyvre ceste reformation ! Ce fut proprement remuer le ciel et la terre à la fois.

«Опыты» были переведены на английский в 1603. Переводчик, Джон Флорио решил передать это место так (в переводе с английского тогдашнего на английский нынешний):

Two or three years are now past since the year hath been shortened ten days in France. Oh how many changes are like to ensue this reformation! It was a right removing of Heaven and Earth together, yet nothing removeth from its own place…

В 1685 году некто Чарльз Коттон снова взялся за Монтеня, и это место у него вышло так:

‘Tis now two or three years ago that they made the year ten days shorter in France. How many changes may we expect should follow this reformation! it was really moving heaven and earth at once. Yet nothing for all that stirs from its place…
